Een zondag is altijd en overal de mooiste dag van de week, maar dat merken we nu weer extra! We zijn dankbaar om ook hier weer een kerk gevonden te hebben, waar God’s Woord duidelijk gebracht wordt en waar het goed is om met andere kinderen van God samen te komen. Door de week zijn we met van alles en nog wat bezig en zijn we van alles aan het ontdekken, maar de zondag heeft een vaste invulling. De Christian Reformed Church heeft op zondag diensten om half 10 en om 6 uur. De invulling van de diensten is heel vergelijkbaar met wat we gewend waren. We zingen uit een hymnbook met de psalmen, een heleboel hymns en een aantal liederen die we in Nederland vanuit de E&R bundels kenden. We zijn ook heel blij met de openheid van de mensen hier. Na de kerkdienst koffiedrinken in de hal: wat is dat ideaal om met allellei mensen kennis te maken. Bij sommigen blijft het bij een praatje, bij anderen zijn we uitgenodigd voor een kop koffie of voor een Australische barbecue. De gemeente heeft ruim 300 leden, zowel jong, middel als oud. Een aardig deel van de gemeente heeft een Nederlandse oorsprong. Veel ouderen zijn hierheen vanuit Nederland geëmigreerd in de jaren 50 of 60. De jongere generatie is hier geboren, maar lust bijvoorbeeld nog graag drop, en hun kinderen noemen hun grootouders bijvoorbeeld ‘oma en opa’. We merken in heel veel dingen dat alles hier nog zo nieuw is. Australie zelf is pas zo’n 200 jaar geleden ontdekt door de blanken. Die zijn toen eerst vooral aan de oostkust terecht gekomen. De westkust is nog veel later pas tot ontwikkeling gekomen. Halverwege de 20e eeuw is het hier pas een beetje gaan groeien. Alles lijkt zo ruim en nieuw. Zaterdagavond hadden we een kerstviering in de kerk: Carols zingen in je korte broek. Bijzondere ervaring. De kerstsfeer is er wat ons betreft nog niet. (Wat dat ook moge zijn). De folders van de winkels staan vol met aanbiedingen voor vlees voor op de barbecue, dunne t-shirtjes en korte rokjes als kerst outfit.... De kerstliederen lijken anders te klinken in de warmte, maar nee, de preek over Mattheus 1 die we zondag hadden en de inhoud van de kerstliederen is overal ter wereld hartverwarmend! We are very thankful that we have found a church here where we hear from the Lord’s Word and where we meet other Children of God. During the week, we are busy with all kinds of things and we explore our neighbourhood, but on Sunday, we don’t have to think about what we are going to do, because we know that we will go to church. We attend the Christian Reformed Church, which has services at 9.30 and 18.00. The church services are very similar to what we are used to. We sing psalms, hymns and some contemporary songs. We enjoy the friendliness of the people here. After church, we drink coffee in the assembly hall, that is a great time to meet people, and some invite us over to their house for coffee or an Australian barbecue. The congregation has over 300 members of all different ages. Quite a big percentage of the people immigrated to Western Australia in the 50s or 60s. The younger generation is born here, but they still love to eat ‘drop’ (a Dutch candy), and their children call their grandparents ‘opa en oma’ (Dutch for grandpa and grandma). We notice that many things are quite new here. Australia itself is discovered by Europeans only about 200 years ago, but they first stayed at the east coast. The west coast has been developed later. Only halfway the 20th century, things have started to grow, and everything looks still rather spacious. On Saturday evening, we had a Christmas celebration in the church: singing carols in shorts is quite an experience! It doesn’t feel like Christmas time, with the brochures form the supermarkets and stores advertising barbecue meat and t-shirts and short skirts to wear for a Christmas outfit! Christmas songs seem to sound different, but no, the sermon about Matthew 1 that we heard yesterday and the contents off the carols are just as great as they always were! Joy to the world!
