ICT op John Knox Een onderdeel waar veel ouders van kinderen op John Knox school over hebben gevraagd is het ICT onderwijs, of liever het gebrek daaraan. Er was een oude pc op school aanwezig met een internetverbinding, maar daar was alles me gezegd. Terwijl hier in Sri Lanka meer en meer zaken via een computer geregeld kunnen worden (pc's in hotels, op kantoor, internetbankieren etc.) wordt er nog niet vaak op een lagere school begonnen met ICT onderwijs. Met geld dat we kregen van de 'plakgroep' van de kerk in Rotterdam-Oost hebben we voor de school een aantal computers kunnen aanschaffen. Na wat moeite met installeren en verder klaar maken is er nu een begin gemaakt met het gebruik ervan: gelukkig is er iemand op school met ervaring die de lessen aan de kinderen kan geven. Beter dan dat ik die lessen geef, want dan had de kans bestaan dat, als we eind november vertrekken, het weer zou stoppen. Nu heb ik mooi de tijd gehad om te helpen met het installeren van de software en wordt het onderwijs gegeven door iemand van de school zelf! De kinderen zijn echt enthousiast, met z'n twee-en achter een computer, het liefst zouden ze allemaal er zelf één hebben. Dat gaat niet, maar dit is al heel goed! De jongere kinderen zijn vooral bezig met het maken van een tekening op de computer. Anderen doen een typecursus op de computer en hopen ook de eerste beginselen van Microsoft Office onder de knie te krijgen. Bedankt, mensen in Rotterdam! There was one old pc with internet connection, but that was all. At the same time more and more things are done with the help of a computer (pc's in hotels, in the office, internet banking etc.), while there is still not that much of ICT education at primary schools. With money we received from the 'plakgroep', a volunteer group, of the congregation of Rotterdam-Oost we could buy a couple of computers. After some hassles with installing, teaching has started. Luckily somebody at school has experience with pc's and is able to teach the children. That is better than me teaching the children, because, after we leave end of November, it might have stopped at all. This better ensures continuity. I had the possibility to help out with installing the software and the rest is done by people of John Knox themselves! The children are really enthusiast about it, with two behind a computer. They would like to have one for themselves. That is not possible, but this is quite an improvement! The ounger children just started with making drawings on the computer. Other children are doing a training for typing on the computer and will start to learn the first things of Microsoft Office.
